Disney’s Mulan Deleted Scene: Reflection
In my opinion, deleting this scene from “Reflection” was a terrible mistake. The song is beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but this added part takes a somewhat disparing song and makes being different empowering and strong.

Yeah, Lea Salonga was heartbroken that they cut the song. I can understand why. This part is inspirational.

I can understand maybe why this part of the song was cut (likely for running time), but I think it was a mistake as well.
It’s so symbolic, how she sheds the clothing and trappings that “aren’t her,” and then she’s riding freely on her horse and singing about she hopes one day she won’t have to have her “secret me” hidden.
I don’t know. The reasoning for the cut could go either way: maybe Disney wasn’t ready to show such empowerment for a girl, maybe it was simply an issue of pacing, or maybe it was a mixture of things. A shame no matter what, though.
